My Lakota Lonestar Quilt

Posted by macroge1176 on Saturday, March 12th, 2011

Several years ago I purchased a lonestar quilt that had been pieced by Lakota women. The piecing that they did was perfect and the colors were very vibrant. Recently I decided that I would quilt this top. That made me really think about what quilting would be appropriate to do justice to the quilt top. It made me really get out of my traditional comfort zone and think of how these ladies would want to see the finished quilt.

I chose many Native American symbols--the wolf, the bear, the eagle, the deer and the bobcat. The quilt top was constructed with very large borders on top and bottom. In these borders I first quilted very large walking bears. Once that was done I alternately quilted in eagle and bobcats within the huge bears on their walk. This gives the image of the spirit within. I love the unique look of this quilt. It is good to make yourself do different things and try new techniques. Happy Quilting!
