The Red One

Winter really makes me feel depressed. Short dark days with more snow and ice do little to make me feel "up". I needed a cure----so I headed to my "stash room". I went through drawers and bins and there I found just the right thing! I took out red sateen that I had bought for the right occasion and I knew that I had the correct base for a new project.

In planning a wholecloth quilt sometimes I use water soluble pens to mark out where to place designs. In the case of the red sateen I could not appoach that way due to fears of not being able to remove the markings. Instead I used a quilters chalk pen that marks white lines faintly but then can be removed with the heat of an iron held over the fabric. What takes the most time in planning a wholecloth quilt is deciding what patterns to use and how well the patterns will keep an even density of quilting. My experience has taught me that having uneven balance of density will result in a quilt which will not hang straight after it is quilted.

By taking the time to chose my patterns carefully I ended up with a balanced wholecloth quilt. And, best of all----I felt happy when it was done. Working with the red sateen was such a mood elevator.  Color choice is so important. The quilting was done with black Glide thread from Filtec. It is a favorite for me and results in effortless great thread tension and gives a nice sparkle to the finished project. I love that there are no thread breaks too!
