Basic Ingredients

Often times we see beautiful quilt projects and get inspired. Lots of times we overlook the basics which made that project a winner. Many times I have seen quilters go to lots of expense to purchase the most beautiful fabrics to make a quilt top. They spend loads of time to piece or appliqué the quilt top until it is a work of art.

When the quilt top is completed they will want to have it finished in the cheapest way possible. They will buy the cheapest batting at the discount store with their 40% off coupon. Many will buy a bedsheet at the discount store for the back of the quilt. I try to explain as tactfully as possible that the “bargain batting” may not be compatible with being longarm quilted. I also tell them that the bargain bed sheet may only have 60 threads per inch. The end result of using the sheet is that the quilting machine will make holes from which batting can poke through—the dreaded pokies!

Good quality batting and compatible backing fabrics are the basic framework of the quilt. In order for the quilt to stand the test of time it is important to have a good base for the quilt and to use quality threads. Next in the ingredients list is the quilting design. The design used should be compatible with the theme of the quilt top. I can offer my customers numerous edge to edge designs or I can do “custom” which can include many designs, crosshatching and more. Binding the quilt is also an issue. Many people do not want to go to the work of applying a binding. They instead choose to roll the backing around to the front of the quilt and sew in down. I can guarantee that doing that will make a quilt have raggedy edges in a short amount of time.

In short, think about doing a baking projects. First you assemble quality ingredients. Them, you follow the recipe and bake as directed. If you cheat on the recipe or shave off baking time your baking efforts are wasted.

Take pride in your beautiful quilt tops and finish them to last!
